Molecular overview
Epitalon (also spelled Epithalon) is a synthetic tetrapeptide with the sequence Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly. It was constructed on the basis of the amino-acid composition of Epithalamin, a complex peptide preparation isolated from the pineal gland (epiphysis) of animals, so the synthetic tetrapeptide and the parent pineal extract are related but not identical materials.
At four residues, Epitalon is among the smallest peptides in the research library. Short sequence length makes correct synthesis comparatively straightforward, but it also means that a single-residue error or deletion produces a materially different molecule — which is exactly what identity testing exists to catch.
Research pathways
The most-cited mechanistic report describes induction of telomerase activity and telomere elongation in telomerase-negative human fetal fibroblast cultures after addition of the peptide. The authors interpreted this as reactivation of the telomerase catalytic subunit in somatic cells.
A 2025 study from an independent group reported dose-dependent telomere length extension in normal human cell lines through hTERT and telomerase upregulation, while noting that in cancer cell lines telomere extension occurred through a different pathway (alternative lengthening of telomeres). That distinction between cell types is an important part of the current mechanistic picture.
Published-research summary
The historical Epitalon literature is concentrated in one research institute and spans cell culture, rodent lifespan and carcinogenesis models, and primate neuroendocrine observations. A 2002 rat study reported an inhibitory effect on chemically induced colon carcinogenesis; lifespan extensions in mice and rats were reported by the same broad research program.
Independent replication was scarce for decades, which is the central limitation of this literature. The 2025 independent cell-line study is a notable exception, but cell-culture findings — even replicated ones — do not establish outcomes in animals or humans, and no controlled human trial base exists for this peptide.
Analytical testing methodology
For a tetrapeptide, mass-spectrometric identity confirmation and chromatographic purity by HPLC are the appropriate baseline checks. Because the sequence is only four residues, deletion or truncation impurities differ by a large fractional mass and are comparatively easy to resolve — but only if identity testing is actually performed rather than inferred.
No Novanta lot report is currently posted for this product, so this page does not imply a lot-specific purity result. Posted certificates for other compounds are available on the Test Reports page.
Descriptions of mass spectrometry above explain an analytical method, not testing performed on Novanta material. The currently posted Novanta reports do not include peptide mass-spectrometry results. Read the matching lot certificate for the identity method actually reported; ICP-MS heavy-metals screening is not peptide molecular-identity testing.
Storage and stability
The sequence contains an aspartate residue, a site where peptide bonds can be prone to hydrolysis and isomerization in solution over time. Keep lyophilized material sealed, dry, protected from light and under the storage conditions on its documentation, and validate any solution-state stability window for the exact formulation and container under study.
There is no universal post-reconstitution interval for Epitalon. The Research Water reference and the Reconstitution Chemistry article cover diluent selection and stability controls without supplying dosing or human-use instructions.
Reconstitution and solution-state variables
Research water reconstitution is not a universal protocol. Peptide sequence, charge, concentration, pH, ionic strength, excipients, container and temperature can each change solubility and solution stability. Researchers should use compound- and protocol-specific controls rather than transfer a preparation method from another molecule.
The Research Water reference explains bacteriostatic and sterile water specifications, contamination controls and post-reconstitution stability limits. The Reconstitution Chemistry article and calculator provide additional laboratory context; neither supplies dosing or human-use instructions.

Research questions
- Is there one reconstitution protocol for Epitalon?
- No. Epitalon solution behavior depends on formulation, concentration, pH, container, temperature and the experimental system. A protocol-specific stability study is more reliable than a generalized interval.
- What does a purity result establish for Epitalon?
- Chromatographic purity describes the measured sample composition under the reported method. It does not establish sterility, biological activity, clinical safety or suitability for human use.
