Understanding Appetite Signaling
Homeostatic hunger and hedonic wanting run on different circuits. Confusing them explains a lot of contradictory findings.

Two systems, not one
Homeostatic appetite tracks energy need through the hypothalamus. Hedonic appetite tracks reward and palatability through mesolimbic dopamine circuits. They overlap, but they are not the same system and they do not always agree.
The familiar experience of eating dessert after a filling meal is the hedonic system overriding the homeostatic one.
Meal-cycle hormones
Ghrelin from the stomach is the only well-established circulating hunger signal; nearly everything else in the loop is a satiety signal. CCK responds to fat and protein, PYY and GLP-1 to nutrient arrival in the distal gut, amylin alongside insulin from the pancreas.
Gastric emptying rate ties the system together, since much of the perceived fullness comes from distension and from how fast nutrients reach the intestine.
Cross-talk with reward
Receptors for several of these hormones are expressed in reward-processing regions as well as the hypothalamus. That distribution is the described basis for reports that satiety signalling reduces food-related reward responses and not only mechanical hunger.
