Why Peptides Are Studied in Aging Research
Specificity, native signalling and tractable synthesis — the three properties that keep short sequences central to longevity biology.

They work through existing circuits
Ageing biology is largely a story about signalling: nutrient sensing, stress response, inflammatory tone, growth signalling. Peptides are the native language of those circuits, so studying them means probing systems the cell already uses rather than introducing an entirely foreign mechanism.
Specificity and tractability
A defined sequence binds a defined receptor, which makes mechanistic attribution cleaner than with broadly acting small molecules. And unlike large proteins, peptides can be synthesised chemically to a precise, verifiable specification, which is what makes reproducible research possible at all.
Honest limitations
Most peptides have poor oral bioavailability and short native half-lives, which is why so much engineering effort goes into stabilisation. And the ageing literature specifically remains dominated by cell culture and rodent work, with a large gap before human evidence.
