What Is Mitochondrial Health?
Not just ATP output. Membrane potential, dynamics, mitophagy and biogenesis together define whether a mitochondrial population is functioning well.

More than energy production
Mitochondria generate ATP, but they also buffer calcium, synthesise iron-sulfur clusters and steroid precursors, generate reactive oxygen species as signals, and act as the decision point for apoptosis. Assessing them purely by ATP output misses most of that.
Quality control
Mitochondria continually fuse and divide. Fusion lets a network share components and dilute damage; fission separates damaged segments so they can be tagged and removed by mitophagy. New mitochondria are produced by biogenesis, coordinated largely through PGC-1α.
Health is the balance of these processes, not the count. A large population of poorly maintained mitochondria is worse than a smaller well-maintained one.

Signalling role
Mitochondria communicate with the nucleus through retrograde signalling, altering nuclear gene expression in response to metabolic stress. Mitochondrial-derived peptides such as MOTS-c and humanin are studied as candidate messengers in exactly this pathway.
