Molecular overview
SS-31—also known as elamipretide, MTP-131 or Bendavia—is a synthetic aromatic-cationic tetrapeptide studied for its interaction with the mitochondrial inner membrane. It is associated particularly with cardiolipin-rich membrane regions.
Research pathways
Biophysical studies indicate that SS-31 partitions at membrane interfaces, interacts with anionic cardiolipin-containing membranes and alters lipid packing and surface electrostatics rather than behaving as a conventional receptor ligand.
Other studies have examined interactions with ATP-production machinery and adenine nucleotide transport. These mechanistic observations remain distinct from proof of a clinical outcome.
Published-research summary
The literature spans isolated mitochondria, animal models and human trials in mitochondrial and cardiovascular conditions. Results across clinical programs have been mixed, and no FDA approval has been granted.
The most defensible research summary is therefore mechanistic: SS-31 is a mitochondria-associated peptide with substantial experimental study, not an established treatment.
Analytical testing methodology
For this short peptide, mass spectrometry can test identity and HPLC can resolve peptide-related impurities. The available Novanta lot report documents the tested lot’s chromatographic result; it does not establish performance in any biological system.
Storage and stability
No universal stability interval should be assigned across formulations. Protect sealed lyophilized material from moisture and light and validate concentration, container, temperature and time as variables in any solution-state study.
