Heart rate variability, resting heart rate, sleep architecture and subjective load — how recovery became something laboratories quantify.

From rest to measurement
Recovery used to be defined negatively, as the absence of training. Physiological monitoring reframed it as a measurable state with its own markers, which makes it usable as a study endpoint rather than a description.
The common markers
Heart rate variability reflects autonomic balance and typically falls under accumulated stress. Resting heart rate rises. Sleep architecture shifts, with slow-wave sleep often affected first. Subjective load scales, despite being self-reported, track outcomes surprisingly well.

Interpreting the numbers
Every one of these markers is noisy day to day and strongly individual. Trends across weeks carry information; single readings mostly do not. Any protocol using recovery as an endpoint needs a baseline period long enough to establish that individual's normal range.
