BPC-157 Research: Mechanism, Evidence and Open Questions

What the molecule is
BPC-157 is a synthetic fifteen-residue sequence derived from a fragment of a protein found in gastric juice. It is unusually stable in acidic conditions, which is one reason it became a frequent subject of oral and injected administration studies in rodents.
It is supplied lyophilized and reconstituted with bacteriostatic water. Novanta releases it only against third-party HPLC and mass spectrometry data at 99%+ purity.
Mechanisms described in the literature
Published animal work most often describes effects on angiogenesis, with reports of upregulated VEGF receptor 2 signalling and increased vessel formation in injured tissue. A second recurring theme is interaction with nitric oxide pathways.
Other papers describe modulation of growth factor expression and effects on fibroblast migration in culture. Taken together the mechanistic picture is broad rather than specific — there is no single well-characterised receptor for the compound.
The evidence gap
The overwhelming majority of the BPC-157 literature is preclinical: rodent injury models and cell culture. Controlled human trials are largely absent, and the animal models used vary widely in design and reporting quality.
That is the honest state of the field. Broad preclinical activity across many models can indicate a genuinely pleiotropic compound, or it can reflect publication patterns from a small number of research groups. Both explanations remain on the table.

Reconstituted BPC-157 should be refrigerated, protected from light, and used within the window your protocol validates. Lyophilized vials are stable frozen for far longer than reconstituted solution.
