Molecular overview
Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide with the sequence Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro. It was designed from tuftsin, an endogenous tetrapeptide, with a proline-rich tail intended to alter stability.
Research pathways
Laboratory studies have examined enkephalin-degrading enzymes, GABA-A receptor modulation and changes in genes associated with GABAergic signaling. Receptor-binding work has proposed positive allosteric modulation rather than direct benzodiazepine-site activity.
These proposed mechanisms are not interchangeable with demonstrated clinical benefit.
Published-research summary
Small studies from Russia reported anxiety-related and neurophysiological endpoints, while animal and molecular studies investigated neurotransmitter pathways. The limited sample sizes, older reporting conventions and lack of large independently replicated trials restrict confidence in human conclusions.
Analytical testing methodology
Mass spectrometry is used to compare measured molecular mass with the expected heptapeptide, and HPLC is used to evaluate chromatographic purity. The available Novanta certificate reports the result for one identified lot only.
Storage and stability
Specific solution stability depends on buffer, concentration, container and temperature. Keep the sealed lyophilized material dry and protected from light, and use protocol-generated stability data rather than a generalized shelf-life claim.
